5 Steps to Successful
Preservation
|
Step
1 - Removal To
remove the hide use a sharp knife only to start and finish the job.
Use your hands to pry and pull the hide off. Leave the tallow on the
hide to help keep the skin soft. |
Step 2 -
Curing Lay hide down flesh side up in a cool dry place.
Spread 3-5 lbs. of table salt on the flesh side. Let sit for 3-4
days until a crust forms and noticeable weeping stops. If a
locker plant is processing it, be sure to request salting and that
it be kept cool for you. DO NOT
FREEZE. (If
Frozen, Thaw & Salt)
Step 3
- Packing Fold sides toward center and roll
up hair side out, keeping salt on the hide. Wrap in paper
and put in a cardboard box with your name, address, phone number
and how you want it tanned : leather or hair-on. DO NOT USE
PLASTIC BAGS. Lack of air circulation can cause rot. If you
have stretched and dried the hide, gently roll it into a loose
cylinder to avoid cracking.

Hides We Tan Into
Leather Deer, Elk, Moose, Buffalo, and
Cow. All deerskin and cowhide are tanned to a
thickness suitable for use in our products. Elk, moose, buffalo and
cow may be sided (split from head to tail) so they can be placed safely
through our tanning equipment. This will mean that if you ship one
cowhide, you will have two "sides" returned to
you.
Hides We Tan
with the Hair On DEER
ONLY Hair-on tanning carries no guarantee for the
outcome. The condition of the animal, how it was skinned, and how it was
preserved are beyond our control and can affect the final result.
Tails are fragile and often come off during the tanning process. We
do not tan capes for taxidermy.
